In what’s being called a major win for the City of Tempe, officials from USA Basketball announced Wednesday that they’re moving from Colorado Springs to Tempe.
The move will also include the construction of a sports and entertainment complex right at the intersection of Mill Avenue and University Drive.
USA Basketball is responsible for putting together the men’s and women’s USA Olympic and National teams. Executives with the organization say they plan on calling the new complex USA Place.
USA place is a $350 million project that will include a 30,000-square-foot convention center, 500 residential apartments and five full-sized basketball courts. Omni Hotels & Resorts will build a 13-story, 330-room luxury hotel in Tempe as part of the planned USA Basketball relocation from Colorado to Arizona.
USA Place will ink a 99-year ground lease with ASU for the land that would house the basketball and real estate development.
This is Huge for Tempe although we will be losing Chilies as part of the deal, we will be gaining growth to the city of Tempe, more money through the city and mill ave will travel into the local business, more tourism, and more beautiful urban development. I keep saying it Tempe has so much potential and future growth. What I do hope is that we can add some more free parking and keep the re-development although new, urban, chic, and luxury to accommodate the college student. Without the students the City of Tempe will be just another city in the valley of the sun. Because of the school and the students we need more housing, we need more restaurants, and we need more bars, more shopping. Think about it on top of the local community the school brings over 60,000 students plus families and friends. That alone is as large as a small city. Great to hear Tempe I am excited being a resident and one who spends time on Mill I love this!
